This site is a tribute to Allan. He is much loved and will always be remembered.
Allan was born in Bradford on June the 17th 1946, son of Mary and Harold. Two years later his sister Lynda was born, they grew up in Wyke. In the early Pyrah family life, home was a one up one down, with a tin bath next to the fire and an outside toilet on Perseverance Street and he never forgot those roots.
He attended Belle Vue Grammar School and then went onto Bradford Regional College of Art, where he specialised in exhibition design.
After leaving Art college he joined a relatively new television company called Five City Films who were based on Duckworth Lane in the Old Elite Cinema, initially making adverts for the fledging Yorkshire TV.
Allan then joined Yorkshire Television in Leeds as a "clapper boy”, progressing up the ladder to assistant camera man, lighting cameraman and eventually becoming the Director of Photography with credits such as Emmerdale # Where the Heart Is # A Dinner of Herbs # Peak Practice # Stay Lucky # Shoot to Kill # Though the Keyhole # Duty Free # The Glory Boys # Harrys Game # Airline # A touch of Frost and WHICKERS WORLD, With Alan Whicker he toured the world.
Allan married Christine in 1972 and had 2 children Nicholas and Shelley.
In his early days Allan was a brilliant table tennis player, playing for Sedbergh Boys Club at Odsal in the highly competitive Bradford TT league.
He played cricket for Wyke Temperance juniors and went on to play for Woodlands. He was an early Woodlands legend, whenever the skipper wanted a wicket or some quick runs Allan rarely failed. He played in a evening League team in Mirfield and in that team was the legendary Harry Atkinson, a Bradford League player who described him as one of the best Players he had ever played with who didn't play higher cricket because of his work commitments.
He played football for Wyke AFC, as a 5' 7" goalkeeper, when work permitted and once played in THE FA CUP albeit the 3rd qualifying round.
Allan was a life long Bradford City fan.
He took up golf and very quickly became a single figure golfer at Cleckheaton GC achieving an impressive 6 handicap with several holes in one to his credit.
As I said at the outset Allan went to Bradford Art Collage and was a fantastic artist.
Latterly he spent a lot of his time at his villa in Spain and on the golf course.
He passed away on the 31/3/21, 74years of age at Cooper House Nursing Home, after a long hard battle with Alzheimer's and vascular dementia and will be sadly missed by his sister Lynda, son and daughter, Nicholas and Shelley and grandchildren Emily, Joseph, Thomas, Jacob and Isaac.
All in all Allan was a unique, unbelievably talented, modest man, but most of all he was a gentleman.
Hoping for a world without dementia X
In memory of our colleague and especially our very good friend Allan.
